Hair Detox: Clarifying vs Chelating

Hair Detox: Clarifying vs Chelating

What's the different between a Clarifying Shampoo and Chelating Shampoo?

Clarifying is a general term for removing buildup from the hair, such as from using hairsprays or moderate use of silicone-based products. These shampoos are sometimes simply just stronger than a regular shampoo to clean deeper.

Chelating, however, uses specific chelating agents to remove minerals, metals, and chlorine (often from hard water) that cause damage. If you have hard water, swim in chlorinated pools, or have excessive amounts of synthetic buildup compacted onto your hair, using a chelating shampoo will be much more effective at detoxing your hair and giving you a bright, lightweight clean slate!

Kavella's Clarifying Shampoo contains gentle chelators suitable for regular use for controlling or correcting moderate amounts of buildup and some swimmers hair. If the level of chelating in our Clarifying Shampoo isn't strong enough for your level of hard water or product buildup, we recommend trying Malibu C.

The ascorbic acid in the Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Hair Remedy is stronger and acts as an intensive corrective treatment. After doing a stronger treatment like this, regular maintenance with our Clarifying Shampoo will maintain the results longer!

How to know if your clarifying shampoo also contains a chelator? Here are a list of chelators you may find in shampoo: Tetrasodium/Trisodium EDTA (very common chelator) Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate Oxalic Acid or Sodium Oxalate Potassium or Sodium Citrate Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate Sodium Gluconate and Gluconolactone.
