FAQs

Can I use Kavella on my hair if I have a straightening or smoothing treatment? Are your products color-safe?

Yes! All of our shampoos are sulfate and sodium chloride free, and they all fall into an acidic pH range to keep the hair cuticle from lifting and losing color molecules.

Why do you use plastic?

We appreciate that glass is an eco-friendly option, but we don’t believe it is the safest option for products that are used in the shower or with slippery hands. We choose to use PET plastic with your safety in mind. Kavella’s long term goal is to convert all our PET plastic bottles and jars to PCR plastic (post-consumer recycled). As a very small business, we currently do not have access to the quantities required to make this transition, but we look forward to growing and making the switch!

Are all your products Vegan? What about the Squalane, Lactylate and Lactic Acid? Do you test on animals?

Unlike squalene which is an animal biproduct, our squalane is derived from olives. Also, our sodium lauryl lactylate, which sounds like lactose, is actually derived from coconuts and not milk. The Lactic Acid in our products is a pH adjustor and is also not derived from milk, but from fermented corn! Our products are certified Vegan and Cruelty-Free by PETA as well as Cruelty-Free by Leaping Bunny.

What is the shelf life of my Kavella product?

Most Kavella products have optimal shelf lives of 2 or 3 years. We also recommend using the product within one year of opening the bottle or jar for peak freshness. Although products can be used longer than these recommended shelf lives, there may be changes in the product’s consistency, color or fragrance after 2 or 3 years. Some products separate upon standing for long periods of time, such as our Moisture Mist. This is because we do not use certain stabilizing ingredients in our products, like PEGs. Simply shake well to remix the product!

Is your plastic BPA free?

We use PET bottles and jars for all of our products. PET plastic is BPA free.

How do I access salon pricing?

Please fill out the following form to request access to salon pricing: https://kavella.com/request-salon-pricing/ For small salons and salon suites, the backbar and wholesale pricing will be accessible directly on the website in each product’s dropdown menu. For larger salons that incur larger shipping costs, we can send an ordering sheet that can simply be filled out and emailed back for each order. With this method, we fill and weigh the order for shipping charges before sending an invoice.

The pump or sprayer of my bottle isn’t working. How do I fix it?

Usually when a pump will not open, it is due to the pump unscrewing and becoming loose. Screw the base of the pump back onto the bottle tightly and then try opening the pump again. For the 32 oz sizes, close tightly, then hold the middle of the base still while unscrewing the top only. For sprayers, there may be a clog, or the product may not have been shaken enough prior to spraying. You may run warm water over the sprayer and wipe off to remove any clogs. The Alcohol-Free Hair Spray and Intensive Protein Treatment use trigger sprayers that have a locking button on the spray head, so be sure this is set to the unlock position. If you are experiencing an issue with your packaging, please let us know at admin@kavella.com! We may replace the product or send you a new pump or sprayer, depending on the issue.

What gives your products that almond scent?

Apricot Kernel Essential Oil, imported from France.

What about diversion? Will I be seeing Kavella on Amazon?

No. Kavella only sells our products at authorized salons and spas as well as on our own website. Unauthorized sales outlets include any mass retailer, drugstore, grocery store, any website that is not run by a salon (no Amazon sales). We can only guarantee authentic Kavella products if purchased from an authorized salon or spa or authorized salon related website. If you see diversion of our products, please contact us!

Can I get samples?

We offer samples to salons who are interested in carrying our products in their salons or to media persons. If you are a salon owner, please submit a request using our contact form and include the salon’s mailing address. We will send a variety of samples.

Are your products hypoallergenic?

As a plant-based haircare brand, allergic reactions to some ingredients is possible. It is important for those with allergies to look at the ingredient list before purchasing the product. Persons with allergies to almonds may find that the Apricot Kernel Essential Oil is not suitable for them. This is the essential oil that gives many of our products an almond scent. If you are not sure about a product being suitable for your allergy, please drop us an inquiry so we can help!
